Ultimate Potential

Sardar Patel Ring Road, Ahmedabad

Project Overview

The Sardar Patel Ring Road (ARR) encircles Ahmedabad city, extending for about 76.35 km within the jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA). It is a vital urban corridor linking major highways, expressways, and arterial routes, ensuring seamless intra-city and regional connectivity.

Translink Infrastructure Consultants Pvt. Ltd. was engaged by AUDA to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for capacity augmentation and six-laning of the existing four-lane divided carriageway, including utility shifting, traffic management planning, and a comprehensive road safety audit. The DPR established the technical, financial, and environmental feasibility for upgrading this key urban infrastructure to meet the city’s growing mobility and safety demands.

Challenges

The corridor experienced intense mixed traffic, frequent congestion, and declining level of service due to the city’s rapid expansion and the growth of peripheral townships. Multiple junctions, uncontrolled access points, and at-grade crossings created numerous conflict zones and accident-prone locations.

Inadequate drainage, limited pedestrian facilities, and encroachment within the right-of-way further constrained operations. The presence of major utilities and development zones on both sides required a design strategy that balanced augmentation with minimal disruption to ongoing traffic and surrounding land use.

Solutions

The DPR proposed six-lane upgradation within the existing RoW, optimizing the median and service road configuration to minimize additional land acquisition. Comprehensive geometric redesign and safety enhancements were introduced, including improved junction layouts, controlled access, grade-separated interchanges, and upgraded drainage systems.

A citywide traffic simulation incorporated the effects of the proposed Outer Ring Road, Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, ensuring sustainable long-term performance. The design utilized digital modeling, crash data analytics, and field audits to validate geometric and safety improvements.

Impact

With the DPR approved and construction in progress, the Sardar Patel Ring Road is set to be transformed into a high-capacity, safe, and efficient urban expressway. The upgradation will significantly reduce congestion, improve travel time, and enhance safety across Ahmedabad’s mobility network.

It will serve as a resilient mobility spine supporting economic growth, regional connectivity, and sustainable urban expansion. Once completed, the project will redefine urban mobility standards for Indian cities through its blend of precision engineering and sustainable design.
